Squads smart accounts now enable self-custodial onchain subscriptions.
We're utilizing this capability for our new Business subscription plan, demonstrating how Solana teams can leverage smart accounts for subscription payments while maintaining self-custody.
Onchain Subscriptions
Until now, recurring payments on Solana required either escrow accounts or manual processing. This forced users to either lock up funds or manually handle each payment cycle, creating friction for both subscribers and businesses offering subscription services.
By leveraging smart accounts and Spending Limits, an existing Squads App feature, subscription payments can now be fully automated while maintaining self-custody and liquidity.
When you subscribe to our Business plan, a Spending Limit is created that is linked to a Squads Lab’s subscription key. This subscription key—which is not a member of your Squad and has no permissions beyond the specified Spending Limit—can direct debit your monthly subscription amount automatically.
The Spending Limit is defined by the following parameters:
designated key (e.g. Squads Labs)
token type (e.g. USDC)
amount (e.g. 49.00)
time period (e.g. monthly)
The Spending Limit parameters and logic are enforced onchain and can be revoked anytime by canceling your subscription.
Get Started With Squads
By leveraging Squads Protocol's smart accounts, teams can create transparent, automated payment flows while ensuring users retain liquidity and custody of their onchain assets—offering a powerful tool for SaaS platforms, content monetization, and more.
If you need a place to secure and manage your onchain assets, create a Squad on app.squads.so and reach out to garrett@sqds.io to learn more.
